For some of us, we probably have heard of someone we know who has dealt with cancer in some form. For others, they may have directly been affected by cancer and may still be dealing with it. On April 25th, the Innovative Fitness Kits team spent the day exercising to do our part to aid in the battle to fight cancer. As a group we were able to raise close to $5000 for the cause. But how did this come about?
I heard about the Workout to Conquer Cancer through some friends, who did the event last year. Also from my wife (a cancer survivor) who had friends who had previously done the event. After speaking to the organizers of the event, we decided to put together a Kits based team. As a participant of the event, you are required to raise a minimum of $500 per individual. As a training group, we decided that we wanted to offer weekly Workout to Conquer Cancer Circuit Classes so that clients and friends could do the workouts and make small donations to the cause. The circuits were a success, and we did them Wednesday nights and Sunday afternoons for 2 months leading into the event. We culminated with a Fundraiser night at the Distillery Kitchen and Bar in Yaletown. We had over 60 coaches, members, and friends show up for the night which made it a big success. Thanks also to the Mark James Group for allowing us to have the party at their venue, it is an incredible spot.
Having raised all of the necessary funds, we met up at the Richmond Oval on April 25th for the day of torture. We started the day off with a Zumba class, which was a lot of fun and included some challenging dance combos. Directly after that we did a retro aerobics class straight out of a Jane Fonda workout tape, followed by boxing workout and a yoga session. After an awesome lunch provided by Freshii, the day finished with a Shred Bootcamp Class led by none other than Tommy Europe! A full day worth of events and there was a great attitude and camaraderie amongst all of the individuals and teams participating in the event.
We would like to thank all the members, friends, and family who supported our team at the circuit classes and fundraiser. But most importantly we would like to thank Bret Hodge, Ben Carr, Aleksander Saddlemyer, Phillip Upton, Carla McCallum, Michael Chong and Suretha Swart for donating their time to lead the classes and raise the funds in order to make the day a success.
