Back in the day when I was 21, a gym rat and long before I became a Nutritionist. I ate as much “calorie free” “stuff” (its not food in my books) that I could get my hands on! Now, its no surprise to me that I was tired all the time and experienced tons of bloating, crazy sugar cravings and chronic headaches!! All of these symptoms are side effects of artificial sweeteners! In fact, studies have shown that artificial sweeteners can put you at greater risk of diabetes, obesity and even increase cravings for carbohydrates! Yes, I’m serious! But wait, aren’t artificial sweeteners suggested for diabetics? Hmmmm, strange indeed my friends! I could go on and on about the dangers of artificial sweeteners, but I’m going to keep this simple. Right now just understand that they have ZERO benefit to you.
The irony of my nutrient devoid diet was that despite the fact that I was eating a ton of “calorie free” garbage (again, not food!). I worked out harder, ate less and weighed MORE than I do now. This didn’t happen overnight, but my “Now” is 16 years later and two babies. Which may seem impossible to you right now. But it is completely possible!
Even if you are a die-hard diet coke drinker, try choosing one week in which you are going to drop anything that contains artificial sweeteners! Just start with one week! I know you can do this and I know you are going to feel amazing for doing so. Remember, do not over think this, just do it and see how you feel. If it feels good, which I know it will, keep going!
These are the names you need to look for on any package items:
Sucralose, Aspartame, Saccharin, Neotame, Splenda and Acesulfame K
Artificial sweeteners are found in MANY items these days. The following are the three categories of food that I most commonly find are sources of artificial sweeteners in my client’s food diaries. Avoid all of them!
• Calorie free drinks: this includes diet pop, calorie free “vitamin water” (insert eyes rolling), crystal light, “skinny” flavoured lattes and any of those “water enhancers” such as “Mio”.
• Yogurt: calorie free and fat free yogurts that are flavoured almost always contain artificial sweeteners. Step away!
• Baked goods: low calorie cookies and other baked goods.
Just because I am taking away your artificial sweeteners, doesn’t mean you have to go without a little sweetness! Here is a fan favorite dessert that will hit the spot!
