Deplorable Reality
Responding to the deplorable reality of our contemporary North American epidemic of childhood inactivity and chronic health challenges, the 60 Minute Kids’ Club was founded on two notions: That every kid deserves the benefits of being active and physically literate. And that to realize those benefits, those adults working to achieve them needed to move from talk to action – that a program needed to developed that was fun and engaging, provided incentives to participate, was grounded in accountability and that included follow-up on the results. In other words, a scalable program that was based on the best practices learned by the 60MKC founders in over two decades of personal training – the same principles that guide the coaching of 60MKC’s co-founding partner, Innovative Fitness.
From the starting place of these shared principles and founders, in the past four years 60MKC has grown from IF’s in-house charity to a national Movement for Movement, expected to be rolling out in 4000 schools, in every Canadian province and territory, by 2015. Notwithstanding our growth beyond the Lower Mainland, we remain close to our friends and founding partners – and their principles. So when we got word that some of those same folks were being led by those principles to create an opportunity for kids to move, where that opportunity was on the chopping block to be taken away, we mobilized to help out.
The result was nothing short of inspiring; In a non-stop 4-day blitz of focused effort, when a small group of parents – including members of the IF ownership team – learned that the North Vancouver School District elementary track & field meet was to be canceled due to the current labour dispute, they decided to do the objectively impossible: To create their own meet out of the ashes, with zero official support or sanctioning and only a trifle more expertise…but a characteristic abundance of passion and belief. Facing challenge after challenge and no shortage of adversity, as a team this small group of parents was victorious in putting on a successful meet for over 1000 smiling, laughing, cheering kids. Our hats are off to them. To you. To the IF Difference. Your team, truly, is the best version of our 60 Minute Kids’ Club. We were honoured and inspired to be on-hand at Swangard to see this difference in action and to provide some small degree of support.
