If you have an internet connection, you’ve probably seen the Starbucks Unicorn Frappuccino floating around on social media.
Over the past few months, unicorns have been slowly becoming all the rage. Their magical allure and inconceivable cuteness has been the talk of the town and has been inspiring thousands of artists, bakers, retailers and now baristas to create their own personal brand of unicorn themed items.
This vibrant pink and blue confection is decorated to the nines with whipped cream and sprinkles and probably tastes like a cotton candy cloud. It’ll cure you of your sweet tooth in a heartbeat, but comes with a significant downside.
The leading ingredient in a unicorn frappucino (apart from all the different types of syrup) is sugar. A grande unicorn frappuccino has 410 calories and 59 grams of sugar. That’s about one and a half times the recommended amount of sugar that you should be consuming per day! After finding this out, I was in shock! As personal training coaches, we are always looking for a healthier way. So I decided to create my own version of the unicorn frap – it’s just as pink and just as cute, but comes without the guaranteed sugar crash.
Lydia-Rose’s Unicorn Breakfast Smoothie
The Base
organic vanilla greek yogurt
¼ cup orange juice
½ cup ice
Pink Part
5 strawberries
½ banana
1 tbsp white chia seeds
½ base
Purple Part
6 blackberries
½ banana
1 scoop cinnamon whey protein powder
½ base
I mixed the pink section with half of the base mixture, and then separately mixed the purple part with the other half of the base mixture. As you pour your smoothie into your glass of choice, layer the different colours to make sure each colour is visible for maximum unicorn-power.
I added a few granola bits and a dollop of vanilla greek yogurt with a blackberry on top as a substitute for whipped cream. The unicorn smoothie is a magical way to start your day! It’s also a fun dessert or a healthy treat for your kids.
