For a Healthy BBQ Replace This With That

Whether you’re working towards building healthier eating habits or just aiming to lose those stubborn last few pounds, with food-centric summer events popping up every other weekend, sticking to your goals might seem impossible! No doubt, opting for the healthier option while everyone else is chowing down on your favorite BBQ treats isn’t an easy thing to do, but it is the smarter option and the best way to help you reach your goals more quickly.

Meats: Grilled Chicken & Fish Instead Of Hamburgers & Hot Dogs

It’s the processed meats and higher fat that get you into trouble—particularly sausages or hot dogs, which are overly processed and contain the most fat. Burgers are generally made with meat that’s higher in fat, so if that is your only option, don’t add fuel to the fire by slathering it with melted cheese or mayo. Chicken and fish contain less saturated fat and do not have the nitrates that red meats do. The best way to cook fish and poultry meats is to grill them; this is a much more low-fat cooking method.

Snacks: Fruit & Veggies Instead Of Chips

Baskets of chips, fried chicken wings or mini-pizzas, typical at any outdoor event, are not only loaded with fat but are also salty, which just makes you more thirsty—likely for more beer!

Try going for fresh fruit and veggie platters with some hummus dip. Satisfy your craving for something crunchy, savory, sweet and spicy with these healthy barbeque zucchini chips or some crunchy baked carrot chips.

Healthy BBQ

Sides: Salad Instead Of Cole Slaw

Substitute a green vegetable salad or a fruit salad in place of coleslaw which is made with a lot of mayo. Mayonnaise has lots of calories and it can be a cause of food borne illness when it’s not refrigerated properly.

Drinks: Fresh Tea Instead Of Sweet Drinks

Instead of the traditional sweet tea or lemonade, opt for a floral tea, such as jasmine or green tea. Add fresh lemon and mint for a refreshing summer blend.

Another way to cut back on the sugary drinks is to alternate between alcoholic drinks and water (or calorie-free beverages). Alcoholic drinks can really add up calorie-wise, and can also stimulate your appetite, making you hungrier!

Desserts: Strawberries & Dark Chocolate Instead Of Cake

If you really are craving that little sugar fix then chocolate covered strawberries might be the way to go!

Dip strawberries in dark chocolate or crushed almonds. The dark chocolate will cure your urge for something sweet and provide a boost of antioxidants. Strawberries are a strong source of vitamin C and fiber, while almonds are a source of healthful fats and are good for your heart.

Gluten Free?

Try this burger bowl idea! Low carb, gluten free and paleo, these burger bowls get rid of the traditional burger bun for a delicious bowl of healthy goodness.

The burger bowl is incredibly easy to put together. Start with a bed of lettuce, tossed in lemon juice and olive oil. Then add some thick slices of tomatoes, grilled onions, and some roasted sweet potatoes (to add that french fry element). Then top it all with a burger patty that is simply seasoned with salt and pepper.

Bon Apéttit!
