Jared is a member of IF TELUS Garden, and a newcomer to the personal training scene. After a long disconnect from having a physical fitness regime, Jared found Innovative Fitness. He has overcome self-doubt to become one of our most inspirational members!
Hey Jared! Tell us a little bit about yourself.
I’m a 27 year old web developer for an e-sports startup in downtown Vancouver. In my spare time, I love cooking, listening to music, watching movies, hanging out with my friends, and playing video games.
Why do you CHALLENGE yourself physically?
I challenge myself physically because I’m very big on self-improvement and pushing myself to be a better person. I have gotten to a place in my life where going to the gym seems like the right fit to achieve better physical and mental wellness, so I’m trying it out to see if it helps in my day to day. So far, it’s doing wonders.
What is your biggest ADVERSITY surrounding your fitness and what do you do to overcome it?
I think that would probably be falling into the trap of comparing myself with others. It’s very easy to become discouraged when you see other people absolutely killing it on their deadlifts and squats, while you’re just doing machine exercises and body weight stuff. I just keep reminding myself that I’m just starting out, and that comparing yourself to someone else is disadvantageous and only founded in self-consciousness.
What has been your biggest VICTORY here at IF so far?
Just getting out there and starting to exercise again. I’ve never been a big fan of the gym, and haven’t been back since high school. The fact that I’ve found a place where I feel comfortable working out and enjoy the staff and other patrons, while feeling challenged enough to be making constant improvements, speaks volumes about what Innovative Fitness is doing.
What advice would you give someone thinking of starting a fitness program?
To stop thinking about it and just do it. If you’re thinking about it, debating with yourself is only going to make it easier for excuses to stop you from doing something that is genuinely beneficial. Even if it’s only 10 minutes on the elliptical, just go and do it. Anything is better than nothing!
