Coach of the Month: Stephen at IF Kitsilano

Name: Stephen Jamison

Length of time at Innovative Fitness: 4 months

Personal Bio:

I grew up in Waterloo, ON where I went to the University of Waterloo for Kinesiology. During my time in university, I traveled on exchange to Australia for 6 months! I love playing hockey and watching it with friends! When I’m not working, I love to get outside – hiking, snowboarding, wake boarding… basically every outdoor sport you can imagine, I will give it a go!

What is your next big personal CHALLENGE?

I’m currently training for the UBC Triathlon coming up in March!

What personal ADVERSITY have you had to overcome to be successful?

Moving out to Vancouver was a big challenge and change for me. I drove my whole life across Canada and the USA. It was intimidating, but I’m loving life in the west coast!

What has been your biggest personal VICTORY at Innovative Fitness?

Participating in the 2016 Train the Trainer event was a highlight in my career with IF. We got sweaty and had our butts kicked by our members, all in the name of charity and building physically literate communities.

What is your biggest member success story:

Our member Mark Volk – he was crushing his upper and lower body workouts every week and doing our program while on vacation in Hawaii to prepare for his half marathon. That’s dedication!

What motivates you as a coach?

The book QBQ: The Question Behind The Question completely changed my perspective on how to work with people, and on personal accountability. It’s a must-read for any industry.

Also, Joe McGill, a registered physiotherapist I worked alongside in Ontario for a year. I learned so much from him, and he became my inspiration to help people be the best version of themselves.

What’s your current workout jam?

Roses by the Chainsmokers!

Any advice to people looking to get a start within the fitness industry?

My advice to give anyone looking to get into the business is to make sure they have are getting into it for the right reasons. It must be a genuine motivation to help people in the health field – not just give random exercises to people and call it a day. This is a job where you can change lives, sometimes without even knowing it. Be ready for that responsibility.

Thanks Stephen!
