Be Uncomfortable

In a world where life’s pleasures are a card swipe, or a mouse click away, we have become increasingly more uncomfortable with being uncomfortable. Which is a tragedy, as lots of the great things in life usually come from outside of where we typically operate.

I had the opportunity this past summer to be uncomfortable and participate in my first ultra marathon: 50 miles of incredible trail running through Manning Park. It was a demanding experience, but one that will stay with me for a long time. The sheer happiness and feeling of accomplishment of crossing the finish line is one that cannot be explained, but one that needs to be experienced.

These are the types of experiences we should actively seek out. Ones that leave us in awe of what we are capable of, that we truly won’t forget. Experiences that allow us to step back and shake our head at what we are able to accomplish.

It can be difficult embracing discomfort. It has to be a conscious decision, and one that is practiced consistently. Here are three simple ways to start integrating more discomfort and growth into your life.

  1. Do “everyday things” differently — change up the breakfast you always have. Add that new exercise into your routine. Inserting simple changes like this into our routine can spice things up and add some needed variety.
  2. Do something once a week that scares you — pick something small. Join a toastmasters meeting if you’re shy. Go on a blind date if you’re single. Go a week without coffee!
  3. Sign up for a big event once a year that gives you butterflies just to think about — nothing says personal growth more than registering for something that is going to require a great deal of energy, and rattles the nerves.

With these steps in mind, plan an amazing end of 2016 and an incredible start to your 2017. Be uncomfortable — it’s where the magic happens.
