The Benefits of Saunas + Hot Tubs

Many associate relaxation as the main purpose and goal when it comes to using hot tubs and saunas, but there are also strong links to metabolic benefits from heat therapy.

People often overlook the true benefits of a good soak because it “feels” good to sit and relax, which is the perfect opportunity to provide some insight into the scientific reasons a hot tub or sauna can help in recovery.

hot tub benefits

  1. Heat encourages the release of endorphins in your body which gives you the “feel good” vibes. Reduction of stress is by far one of the greatest attributes of heat therapy. Your body goes into a natural relaxation phase where muscles release tension.
  2. Increased sweating releases toxins in our body and promotes blood flow throughout the body. Your heart rate will rise 50-60 bpm causing your metabolic system to work harder and improve cardiovascular output. This process requires energy to be burned in the form of calories.
  3. Our body temperature is homeostatically controlled to hover around 37 degree Celcius. When the heat of a sauna or hot tub causes our internal core temperature to rise our body’s natural reaction is to increase production of white blood cells (immune fighting cells). Our immune system is activated on a higher level than normal which improves our body’s ability to fight disease.

Despite these benefits, a hot tub/sauna need to be used carefully and with caution as it is not the best solution for every person. People with heart conditions, pregnant women and children are not suitable to use these facilities. An increased pulse will drop blood pressure in the body making you feel dizzy/fatigued very quickly which can be a huge health problem for those individuals with heart deficiencies.

sauna benefits

Children remaining in the hot tub or sauna for longer than 10-15 minutes may feel light headed and nauseous. Finally it is important to remember that you should NEVER use these facilities under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Specifically when it comes to a hot tub where you are likely to drown should you lose consciousness.
